What a tragedy that was completely preventable! The nation was shocked earlier this year when a six-year-old shot his teacher, Abby Zwerner, at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia. Luckily, Zwerner survived the incident, but the fact that a child was able to shoot a teacher intentionally is just horrifying. And what makes this story even worse is the negligence of the school district, which has led to a $40 million lawsuit being filed by Zwerner against the school district.
It turns out that the shooter had a history of acting out at school, with reports of him telling his peers that he wanted to set teachers on fire. Despite these reports, the school district failed to take any action to help this troubled child, citing a lack of resources. Furthermore, questions still remain as to how a six-year-old was able to get their hands on a firearm.
But the plot thickens! The shooter’s mother, Deja Taylor, was recently charged with gun charges, including lying on the background check form when she purchased the weapon her son used in the shooting. According to reports, Taylor admitted to being a marijuana user for 11 years and lying about her drug use when she purchased the handgun at a local gun shop in July 2022.
Virginia Elementary School Shooting Revealed to Be a Preventable Fiasco

This case is getting a lot of national attention because of the young age of the shooter and the fact that it was completely preventable. Even the federal prosecutors involved in the case have stated that there was no lock box, trigger lock, or trigger lock key found in Taylor’s residence following the shooting. The fact that this mother was a drug user and lied on the background check form is also deeply concerning.
This preventable shooting is just another example of why we need to focus on enforcing our gun laws and keeping firearms out of the hands of those who shouldn’t have them. The fact that the shooter was a child and the mother was a drug user highlights the need for more comprehensive background checks and stricter gun control measures.
Hopefully, justice will be served in this case, and steps will be taken to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Abby Zwerner and the entire Richneck Elementary School community.
