The latest survey by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute has shown that Americans overwhelmingly support increasing military spending and continuing to provide security assistance to key allies such as Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan. The survey highlights the disconnect between Washington lawmakers who want to impose limits on military aid and the 77% of Americans who are in favor of boosting military spending.
The public’s strong support for increasing military spending and maintaining military bases around the world is a clear indication of their commitment to standing against authoritarian regimes and upholding U.S. global leadership. It’s no surprise that Americans are backing a robust defense posture, especially in a time of heightened global conflict and uncertainty.
The bipartisan majority also believes that the U.S. should assist allies like Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan in defending themselves against aggression, as long as they are willing to put up a fight. This unwavering support for embattled allies, particularly Ukraine, defies the false narrative about waning support and underscores the enduring solidarity between the American people and these critical allies.

Despite calls to slash the defense budget, the survey reveals that Americans are steadfast in their desire for a strong U.S. military presence globally. They reject the Biden administration’s focus on the Indo-Pacific region and instead advocate for an equitable distribution of resources across the Middle East, East Asia, and Europe, demonstrating their unwavering support for a comprehensive global military posture.
Notably, the survey reflects growing concerns about China’s growing military capabilities and human rights abuses, with more than half of respondents viewing China as the greatest threat to the United States. This marks a significant increase from previous years, highlighting the escalating apprehension about China’s aggressive actions and its disregard for human rights.
Despite the overwhelming support for increased defense spending, confidence in the U.S. military remains at a record low according to the survey. It’s concerning that only 46% of Americans expressed confidence in U.S. defense capabilities, signaling a need for our leaders to prioritize strengthening America’s military and confronting our authoritarian adversaries.
The survey, based on a combination of telephone interviews and online surveys, provides a clear mandate from the American people to bolster the nation’s defense capabilities and reinforce its commitment to vital allies. It sends a powerful message to Congress and our elected officials to heed the will of the people and prioritize the strength and security of the United States in a world fraught with challenges.
