It seems like the weekend news cycle threw a doozy at us, and it all revolved around an incident involving some ICE agents, a protest, and a guy named Alex Pretty. If you think it sounds like a setup for a low-budget action flick, you’re not alone. Unfortunately, this was real life, not Saturday night popcorn fare, and it turned into quite the chaotic spectacle.
You see, this whole incident was a perfect storm of bad decisions, misplaced intentions, and what can only be described as an astounding lack of common sense. Reports came out that Alex was part of a protest against ICE, and in a fit of protest madness, he got closer than he should have to some agents. Now, you’d think common sense would dictate that getting in the face of people who carry handcuffs and badged guns isn’t the best move, but alas, common sense isn’t so common these days.
The atmosphere surrounding these protests is tense – like trying to breathe during a chili cook-off. There’s so much yelling, name-calling, and general commotion that it might leave even the best of us a little frazzled. It’s tough on the ICE agents too. They don’t wake up, grab their coffee, and say, “Gee, I hope today is filled with chaos and angry protesters!” yet here they are, caught in the middle of what seems to be a circus act.
Now, what unfolded was an unfortunate mishmash of human error and panic. Alex had some run-ins that went south—he got pepper-sprayed while trying to be a good Samaritan (note to self: avoid the role of Good Samaritan when it involves ICE agents and pepper spray). Then came the trigger-happy moment where the gun went off. It seemed like everyone was struggling for control as much as toddlers at a birthday party trying to share a single cake. In a flash, there were ten shots fired. Did we really need a double-digit number in the shooting department? This isn’t a video game where you rack up points for taking down “bad guys.”

Let’s stick to peaceful protests on sidewalks, and remember, getting close to someone with a gun probably isn’t going to end well. A little common sense can go a long way, or at least keep you from becoming the next viral video for all the wrong reasons.
