AMA Rocked by Outrage Over Uterus Transplants for Men Proposal

The American Family Association, a national family advocacy group, has criticized a paper published in the American Medical Association Journal of Ethics that explores the ethical considerations of uterus transplants for biological men who identify as female. The association has issued a warning and started a petition demanding that the AMA stop suggesting taxpayer funding for what they view as “unnatural and irreversible gender-modifying procedures.” Walker Wildmon, the vice president of the AFA, stated that the AMA is promoting a procedure that goes against the fundamental purpose of medicine, which is to protect and preserve innocent human life. Wildmon argues that the AMA is crossing a dangerous line by promoting uterus transplants for men who identify as women.

The petition has garnered over 31,706 signatures, urging doctors and the AMA to prioritize their oath to “first, do no harm.” The petition further asserts that the AMA has prioritized social and partisan activism over its commitment to the Hippocratic Oath. Dr. Martin Makary, a professor at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, has also criticized the AMA, calling on the organization to focus on critical aspects of the transgender issue, such as studying the long-term outcomes and regrets of medical interventions for transgender children.

In response to the controversy, the AMA stated that it does not have an official position on uterine transplants for transgender individuals as a form of gender affirmation. While the Journal of Ethics articles, which the AMA emphasizes are independent of the organization, can provide insights into emerging medical treatments, they do not represent the AMA’s official stance. The AMA says its work remains focused on the art and science of medicine and the improvement of public health.

The article highlights the growing skepticism among medical professionals regarding gender transitions and medical interventions for transgender individuals despite the AMA’s support for such procedures. The AFA and other critics cite an increasing body of evidence that questions the necessity and potential harm of these medical interventions.
