U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recently faced a hard lesson in political reality as she fell short in her attempt to claim the prestigious title of ranking member on the House Oversight Committee. Despite her self-proclaimed status as the voice of a new generation and champion of progressive values, the House Democrats’ Steering and Policy Committee apparently preferred the more seasoned hands of Rep. Gerry Connolly from Virginia, who presumably still knows how to locate a committee meeting without a GPS.
The vote, which took place behind closed doors, resulted in a clear defeat for the young congresswoman. Connolly emerged victorious with a final count of 34 to 27, which may signal that Ocasio-Cortez’s fame on social media doesn’t quite translate to political heft in the actual corridors of power. While she is known for her fierce rhetoric and social media prowess, it seems a majority of her fellow Democrats opted for the reliability of Connolly’s decades of experience instead of the flashy banner of progressivism carried by AOC.

Of course, this setback hasn’t quelled Ocasio-Cortez’s ambition. She remains steadfast in her quest for what many have dubbed a “key position.” One must wonder if she believes that passion alone qualifies her for high-ranking positions usually reserved for those who might have actually attended a committee meeting or two within their lengthy careers. Nevertheless, she is determined to appeal to the full Democratic caucus, which will have the final say. Given the dynamics of caucus politics, this might be akin to an underdog team trying to score a Hail Mary at the last second—hopeful, but not exactly a solid strategy.
Ocasio-Cortez isn’t the only younger Democrat to face challenges in the pecking order, with the House seeing a surprising trend of seniors being outmaneuvered by their younger colleagues. Notably, Rep. Angie Craig managed to dethrone long-standing Agriculture Committee member David Scott, proving that perhaps experience isn’t as revered as it once was—at least among those who’ve spent too many years in Washington’s bubble. Connolly’s seniority likely didn’t hurt his chances, but when it came down to it, even his most vocal supporters recognized that not all messages need to stem from a TikTok dance video.
Supporters of Ocasio-Cortez remain optimistic in the wake of this political stumble, insisting that the power of the caucus could still be swayed. But these assertions could be likened to trying to convince a cat that bath time is a joyful occasion. The skeptics will be watching closely, as this instance may serve as a valuable reminder that effective governance often requires a little more than social media sizzle. The approval of the full caucus will be the true test of whether Ocasio-Cortez’s star power can shine brightly enough to cast a shadow over political hierarchies steeped in experience.
