AOC Loses House Leadership Vote, Left Blames Republicans

The spectacle of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s recent defeat in the House Oversight Committee leadership battle has sent ripples through the left. Co-hosts of the liberal talk show The View took to their chairs to dissect this monumental loss, primarily assigning blame to the all-too-familiar scapegoat: the mean-spirited and allegedly demonizing Republicans. Sunny Hostin was quick to lament that AOC’s progressive bona fides led her to be portrayed as far-left, which in her view, should be a boon rather than a burden for the Democratic Party.

In a show of solidarity for the socialist agenda, Hostin insisted that Ocasio-Cortez’s platform—healthcare for all, affordable housing, and free public college—was the future. Apparently, if these radical ideas are deemed too progressive for mainstream America, then it’s not the Democrats that should change; it’s America that needs to adjust its thinking. Who knew healthcare for all meant making sure nobody ever pays a dime out of their own pocket? Such a deal could make the Democrats proud, assuming they had ever met a budget they actually liked.

Not everyone on set shared Hostin’s enthusiasm for Ocasio-Cortez’s policies. Alyssa Farah Griffin made the shocking observation that many Americans are not on board with the far-left Green New Deal. The move to crush jobs and introduce restrictive travel regulations apparently doesn’t sit well with those pesky voters who actually prefer a functioning economy. It’s hard to imagine how a plan that likely causes more unemployment and makes vacations a logistical nightmare could be viewed positively by anyone not living in an echo chamber.

AOC’s defeat came in a closed-door caucus vote that ended with Rep. Gerry Connolly walking away with a resounding victory—131 votes to 84. The seasoned Democrat clearly has some pull within party ranks, possibly due to his connections, including a nod of approval from the mighty Nancy Pelosi. Losing to a 74-year-old establishment figure has to sting for a 35-year-old fresh face who thought her progressive ideals could reshuffle the party landscape.

Whoopi Goldberg couldn’t resist questioning whether the Democrats were failing to listen to their “young members.” Hostin vehemently defended, of course, the bright, youthful future of the Democratic Party, pointing out that while Republicans had made some small inroads with young voters, the youth were still predominantly in the Democrats’ camp. One has to wonder—if the young folks really voted that way, how does AOC’s loss fit into this narrative? Perhaps trolling the party’s radical agenda isn’t the winning strategy they think it is.

Even former President Trump weighed in on this political drama with his characteristic humor, implying that AOC should keep swinging for the fences. It seems like a fair bet that, while the tides may be turning, Ocasio-Cortez has a way to go before securing a leadership spot—if that’s her goal at all. In the intertwining chaos of the Democrat Party, Ocasio-Cortez’s quest for leadership highlights an embarrassing division, one that is equally entertaining for those watching from the right.
