Starting January 1, 2026, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) will implement significant changes to the Form One process for National Firearms Act (NFA) firearms applications. These updates aim to modernize and streamline the system in response to a dramatic increase in applicants—from around 25,000 annually to nearly 149,000. One of the most welcomed changes by Second Amendment supporters is the removal of the requirement to notify local law enforcement, a move seen as protecting applicants’ privacy and reducing unnecessary government intrusion.
Additionally, the long-standing $200 tax stamp on items like suppressors, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, and Any Other Weapons (AOWs) will be eliminated under the provisions of the “One Big Beautiful Bill” (H.R. 1). This tax had been a significant financial barrier for many law-abiding gun owners, and its removal lowers the cost of obtaining these firearms and accessories, enhancing accessibility without sacrificing regulatory oversight.
The digitization of the application process is another major advancement. The ATF will now allow electronic submissions, digital signatures, and even cell phone photos for identification, significantly reducing paperwork and processing time. These changes reduce bottlenecks associated with the previous paper-based system, with average processing times falling from approximately 30 minutes to 12 minutes per application.
Despite these positive steps, concerns remain among many gun rights advocates regarding the fundamental constitutionality of the NFA itself. While the modernization reduces red tape and financial burdens, the broader debate about the legality of these regulations continues. Gun owners are encouraged to participate in the public comment period to advocate for continued improvements that respect Second Amendment freedoms.
