In a recent episode of NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Senator Bernie Sanders took a moment to remind everyone that the political landscape is as murky as it is amusing. He offered his thoughts on the evolving positions of Vice President Kamala Harris, who seems to have engaged in a bit of ideological acrobatics in her quest for electoral success. Despite her former stances advocating for Medicare for All and a ban on fracking, it appears that these bold positions have given way to the more pragmatic pursuit of votes. Apparently, staying true to one’s original beliefs has taken a backseat to vanishing political realities.
Kristen Welker, host of the show, tried her best to shine a light on the inconsistencies in Harris’ positions. It must have been a challenge for Sanders as he navigated this political minefield. Instead of acknowledging any sort of abandonment of progressive ideals, he insisted Harris is merely engaging in a bit of “pragmatism.” Perhaps the senator missed the memo that “pragmatic” is just another way of saying “flexible” in the realm of political ambition.

Sanders, who has built his career on championing the working class and rural Americans, expressed his belief that many citizens feel their government no longer has their backs—shocking revelation, indeed. For those out of the loop, this is not a new complaint amongst conservatives who have long observed that the elite have cultivated a system which favors big-money interests over the average Joe. Strangely enough, Sanders seems to think that waving the flag for Medicare for All can somehow unite voters beyond the Democrats’ usual base, as if magic fairness could solve the convoluted problems of American healthcare.
As the conversation continued, the question of whether Sanders still views Harris as a progressive also came up. He answered with a resounding yes, indicating his enduring commitment to the cause, despite the fact that progressivism seems to have a rather fluid definition depending on the election cycle. This serves as a perfect example of how political labels can be stretched and warped, much like a pair of old sweatpants—the kind that has seen better days but gets the job done.
The entire debate underscores a larger issue: the lengths to which politicians will go to maintain their relevance. While Sanders clings to the notion that pragmatic shifts in policy represent not a betrayal but rather an evolution, it’s worth considering how many voters are truly buying into it. The comedy continues, and as political theater grows ever more absurd, one can’t help but chuckle at the sight of so-called progressives contorting their beliefs to fit the ever-changing political winds.
