A new national poll by Reuters/Ipsos has found that President Joe Biden’s overall job approval is at 36%, the lowest it has been in nearly two years. The poll also found that former President Donald Trump is leading on several important issues. Trump has a 10-point lead on the economy, a 17-point lead on immigration, and a 7-point lead on foreign conflicts and terrorism. In addition, Trump leads by 6 points when voters are asked to choose between him and Biden in a head-to-head matchup, and also leads by 6 points when potential leaners are included.

In an expanded field, Trump’s lead is nearly identical at 5 percentage points. The Harvard/Harris poll also shows that Biden is struggling to win over independent voters, with Trump leading among this group by a 10-12 point margin. Political analyst Nate Silver has warned that the polling averages show that the race is stable, which may not bode well for the incumbent president.
Despite these negative poll numbers, Senate Democrats in swing states do not believe that the polls accurately reflect reality, with Biden trailing in almost every swing state in recent polling. Despite this, they have expressed confidence that Biden is winning. Furthermore, they have been urged to aggressively campaign alongside Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in their states over the next five months.
