The Biden-Harris administration’s latest move has confirmed what many conservatives feared all along: it seems that the political elite in D.C. have a thing against gas-powered vehicles. Despite Vice President Kamala Harris’s fiery rhetoric back in Flint, Michigan, where she promised never to force anyone into an electric vehicle (EV), the administration has now approved California’s ambitious plan to phase out gas-powered cars entirely by 2035. In a classic case of political double-talk, voters are left scratching their heads wondering where the “freedom of choice” went.
It appears that Harris’s Stump speech was just that—a speech. The administration’s recent actions directly contradict her promises. On the campaign trail, she was adamant about not telling people what to drive and instead focused on investing in local communities. Fast forward to now, and suddenly, it’s all about pushing electric car regulations down everyone’s throats instead of respecting consumer choice. Clearly, when it comes to eco-friendly politics, the only “investment” is in restricting the freedom of Americans to drive what they want.

The approval of California’s electric car mandate is not just bad news for gas-loving citizens; it also opens the floodgates for other states to follow suit. The American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers group has been vocal about the potential consequences of these mandates, suggesting they could sharply increase costs for millions of Americans who have done nothing to warrant such regulation. Most folks aren’t ready to fork over a small fortune just to conform to California’s California-thinking, especially when many states haven’t even proven they can meet these lofty sales targets.
The echo chamber of the left seems perfectly content to disregard common sense. While they pat each other on the back about “clean air” and “climate change,” everyday Americans—whose livelihoods depend on their ability to choose reliable cars—are left holding the bag. The Institute for Energy Research highlights numerous challenges associated with EVs, from rising costs to limited charging infrastructure. It’s as if those pushing for electric vehicles are forgetting one simple truth: access to affordable transportation has been a cornerstone of American life. It’s worth noting that the incoming Trump administration is likely to take a sharp knife to the EPA’s waivers, making it harder for these draconian measures to stick around.
In a nation where the Constitution guarantees personal freedoms, the Biden administration, alongside their California compadres, continues to step on the gas pedal of government overreach. They seem intent on creating a future where consumers are forced into electric vehicles—whether they want to or not. While conservatism thrives on the principles of freedom and choice, the direction these policies are pointing leads straight towards a dystopia where bureaucrats dictate the cars people can drive.
