Joe Biden has once again showcased his penchant for theatrics by deciding to give the Presidential Citizens Medal to former Representative Liz Cheney and Michigan Democrat Bennie Thompson. This absurd award is supposedly for their “work” on the January 6 Committee, a committee that many regarded as a partisan circus designed to take down Donald Trump. Joe’s move is as transparent as a clear blue sky, intended to reward those who took a swing at his political foes.
In an ironic twist, the spiel surrounding the award touted these figures for putting the American people over party. Yet, one could easily argue that their actions during the January 6 Committee were anything but unifying. Instead, they seemed to prioritize political theater over genuine governance, leading to the question of whether the average American believes this award is even deserved. Cheney’s demeanor during the event was revealing; she appeared to be less-than-thrilled about the accolades while seemingly recoiling from Biden’s hand-holding. One could almost hear the collective sigh of dissatisfaction amidst what was likely a mostly applauding Democratic crowd.

There’s an uncomfortable element to this whole charade. Cheney, who was once rumored to be in the running for a presidential pardon from Biden, now finds herself accepting an award instead. The speculation of clemency, perhaps for her various misadventures, hangs in the air like a rancid odor. As the clock ticks down on Biden’s term, pardons are expected—much like the predictable plots in low-budget sitcoms. Whether Cheney will be among the beneficiaries remains to be seen, but one can only hope this award isn’t some desperate attempt to curry favor before being thrown to the wolves.
The backlash from this spectacle has been palpable. Ted Cruz, the steadfast Texas senator, didn’t hold back in criticizing Biden for bestowing such an honor on Cheney. He pointed out that in the real world outside of Washington, tampering with a witness likely wouldn’t earn a person a medal, but rather a one-way ticket to jail. The irony of the situation isn’t lost on those who are attuned to the selection of individual priorities contradicted by the reality many face outside the corridors of power.
Adding to the chaos, journalist Glenn Greenwald provided a reality check, noting how the left had vilified Cheney for her beliefs over the years, only to turn around and award her for her supposed decency. Talk about a reinvention narrative! Meanwhile, Bennie Thompson’s own history, including his objections during the 2000 election certification process, throws additional shade on the legitimacy of this award. The House Administration Subcommittee’s referral of Cheney’s conduct to the FBI just serves to deepen the intrigue. While Biden’s moral compass may appear broken, the continuing saga of partisan theatre surrounding the January 6 incident is certainly set to unfold further, leaving many wondering just what the Biden administration will conjure up next in this circus.
