A recent report from the Department of Housing and Urban Development revealed that homelessness in the United States has surged to a record high, marking a 12 percent increase. This surge in homelessness has hit families with children particularly hard, with a staggering 15.5 percent rise in homelessness among this group.

The report is clear: the federal government’s homelessness statistics have not seen such a dramatic increase since 2007. The Associated Press explained that an uptick in first-time homelessness contributed to the surge, effectively reversing a downward trend that began in 2012. Dennis Culhane, a homelessness expert from the University of Pennsylvania, attributed much of the unprecedented surge in homelessness to the uncontrolled surge of illegal immigration.
