The Biden administration has once again proved its incompetence in handling the crisis at the southern border, as it has admitted to releasing “over 300,000” unaccompanied immigrant children into the United States after they crossed the border illegally. This shocking revelation was made by the head of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Xavier Becerra, during a grilling by concerned House Republicans.

Becerra’s admission is a rare moment of truth from an administration that has consistently downplayed the scale of the border crisis. The figure is staggering and on par with data on the HHS website, which indicates that 392,000 children have been let go to sponsors in the United States since October 2020, including the final four months of the Trump administration.
This unprecedented number of unaccompanied immigrant children being released into the country is a direct result of the Biden administration’s failure to secure the border and enforce immigration laws. The influx of children has overwhelmed border authorities and unrelated agencies, putting a tremendous strain on resources and leading to a lack of proper vetting and screening for sponsors.
The Biden administration’s handling of the situation has been nothing short of disastrous. It has resorted to creating tent cities at various spots along the border to house unaccompanied children, rather than taking the necessary steps to deter them from making the dangerous journey in the first place. The administration has also expedited the release process by easing its vetting and screening process of sponsors, putting children at risk of being placed in unsafe environments.
Furthermore, the HHS’s inability to follow up with sponsors after releasing children into their care is deeply concerning. It is appalling that HHS was unable to reach 85,000 sponsors, raising serious questions about the well-being and safety of these vulnerable children. Becerra’s refusal to provide a specific percentage of children the HHS was able to follow up with only adds to the alarming lack of accountability and responsibility on the part of the Biden administration.
Overall, the Biden administration’s mishandling of the border crisis and its reckless release of unaccompanied immigrant children into the United States has created a humanitarian and national security disaster. It is high time for the administration to take meaningful action to secure the border and uphold immigration laws, rather than perpetuating the chaos and endangering the lives of innocent children.
