The Biden administration’s record of poor handling of weather-related challenges is to blame for the surge in grocery prices. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, during a Wednesday press conference, directly made this bold claim that reduced agricultural production, and subsequently, higher grocery prices are the result of their policies. Unfortunately, the impact of these skyrocketing prices is primarily felt by households with limited incomes, mainly seniors and those with lower incomes.
Despite an overall decline in the inflation rate for the past seven months, the prices of essential commodities continue to rise. This surge in grocery prices is a matter of great concern for numerous families, making it challenging for them to make ends meet. The Labor Department announced that the cost of food at home, which constitutes an essential portion of every American’s budget, has increased by 11.3% compared to the previous year.
The Biden administration’s policies are to blame for the rise in essential commodity prices brought on by the severe storms, droughts, and wildfires that have plagued the country. Notably, lower-income households allocate a more considerable part of their income to food. Adding to their woes is the expiration of enhanced food stamp benefits that may affect 30 million people in 32 states.
The United States Department of Agriculture predicts that grocery costs would continue to climb, albeit at a slower pace than last year. However, this decline is no comfort to families still reeling from the pandemic-induced financial crisis. While the USDA forecast predicts an 8% increase in grocery prices this year, hunger and food insecurity remain significant risks that the Biden administration must address urgently. Biden’s policies might have helped the big corporations and left common people to suffer due to high food prices that continue to plague us.
