Folks, grab your reading glasses and strap in for some spicy news! So, it turns out that despite President Biden’s so-called efforts to keep the peace in the Middle East, a bunch of shipping companies are saying “No thank you, Red Sea” due to the rise in attacks from those troublemaking Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.
First up, we’ve got Maersk saying “Adios” to the Red Sea shortcut. Then, like a game of tag, a whole bunch of other companies followed suit, including BP, CMA CGM, Equinor, Euronav, Evergreen, Frontline, Hapag-Lloyd, MSC, OOCL, and Yang Ming Marine Transport. These companies are rerouting their ships or just sitting in safe waters, waiting for the all-clear. And get this, some of them are even stopping acceptance of Israeli cargo! Ouch!

And let’s not forget the close calls these ships are having. We’re talking near-miss incidents and missiles being fired at vessels! It’s like a real-life action movie out there. But here’s the kicker: all this hullabaloo could lead to shortages and price hikes for goods, as well as oil and gas. And with the U.S. depending less on its own energy and having less backup supply, this could turn into a real mess.
The Wall Street Journal says that more companies might join the “Red Sea? No way!” club, and if that happens, the global oil market could get a real shake-up. Prices could shoot through the roof, and everything could get more expensive. Yikes!
Now, some folks might say, “Hey, Biden, do something!” But turns out, it’s not that Biden can’t do anything. It’s just that he hasn’t done enough to make those Iran-backed troublemakers think twice. Without some real muscle behind his “Don’t” commands, the bad guys aren’t flinching. Even with the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower cruising around, the Houthi rebels aren’t batting an eye. It’s like they’re playing a game of chicken with a big ol’ warship.
So, the moral of the story here is that these rebels are causing chaos in the Red Sea, and no one’s really slapping their wrists for it. And until someone does, it looks like the Red Sea could become a no-go zone for a whole bunch of ships. And that’s bad news for everyone involved.
