President Joe Biden is taking a break from napping in the oval office to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping. They’re meeting in the San Francisco Bay area because apparently, Xi Jinping wanted to take a vacation to the beautiful and sunny California coast. But let’s not be fooled by this seemingly casual meeting location, because there are some serious issues on the agenda.

The Biden administration is trying to manage the United States’ relationship with the Chinese Communist Party, and they think it’s important to have open lines of communication. Well, isn’t that nice? Maybe they should have thought about that before they let China run wild with their unfair trade practices and human rights abuses. But I guess it’s never too late to start trying to fix things, right?
The administration officials say they will also be discussing “a range of regional global and transnational issues.” What does that even mean? Are they going to talk about the latest trends in global warming and world fashion? I doubt it. It’s probably just a bunch of meaningless political jargon that they throw around to make themselves sound important.
But here’s the real kicker: the officials say they believe “intense competition requires and demands intense diplomacy to manage tensions.” Oh really? So, now they’re admitting that their weak approach to China for the past few decades hasn’t worked? It’s about time. Maybe if they had been tough from the start, we wouldn’t be in this mess.
In any case, let’s hope that Biden can at least hold it together during this meeting. We don’t need any more embarrassing moments like when he fell asleep during the G-20 Leaders’ Summit last year. And maybe, just maybe, he can actually get something done to protect American interests and hold China accountable. But I won’t hold my breath.
