President Biden is taking a trip to Minnesota to visit a family-run farm and hold a fundraiser with top Democrats from the state. The purpose of the visit is twofold: to demonstrate his political strength in the face of his new primary challenger, Rep. Dean Phillips, and to announce over $5 billion in spending on various initiatives, including adapting agriculture to climate change and expanding high-speed internet access.
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack emphasized that the president is committed to prioritizing equity in all aspects of his policies. The trip is seen as an opportunity for Biden to rally support and show that he is still the best candidate for the 2024 election, despite Phillips’ challenge.
However, Phillips, a moderate congressman from the Minneapolis suburbs, has been outspoken in his belief that Biden should step aside and make way for a new generation of leaders. He argues that polls show voters are concerned about Biden’s age and electability against former President Donald Trump. While Phillips may have some supporters, Democratic Party leaders seem to be backing Biden and dismissing the idea that there is a need for an alternative candidate.
Minnesota Democratic Gov. Tim Walz, who is joining Biden at the fundraiser, has been particularly vocal in his support for the president. He released a fundraising email titled “Minnesotans Love Joe Biden” and criticized Phillips for creating a “political side show” with his campaign.
Notably, polls have shown that many voters, including Democrats, perceive Biden as “old” and “confused”. Despite these concerns, Biden’s campaign is confident in his ability to mobilize a winning coalition and shore up support in key states like Minnesota. However, Democratic pollster Cornell Belcher warns that Minnesota is not a guaranteed blue state and Biden will need the support of the midwestern blue wall to secure his re-election.
In the end, it remains to be seen how much traction Phillips’ challenge will gain and if it poses a real threat to Biden’s re-election bid. For now, Biden is focused on his trip to Minnesota and using it as an opportunity to reaffirm his commitment to rural America and assert his political clout.
