Biden Eyes Supreme Court Changes Amid End of Term Scramble

As President Joe Biden’s term careens toward its final months, the White House press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, is gearing up for yet another briefing, this time at 1:45 p.m. One can only speculate how many questions will come her way about the administration’s lofty ambitions. It seems that revamping the Supreme Court is high on Biden’s to-do list, right alongside getting ice cream and avoiding any tough questions at all costs.

Rumor has it that among Biden’s grand plans are term limits for Supreme Court justices and a fancy new code of conduct that he hopes will magically fix all the ‘problems’ he perceives within the highest court in the land. It’s a classic case of trying to reshape institutions when things don’t go your way. Instead of leading the nation through genuine solutions, Biden’s team appears more interested in pandering to the progressive wing of the party, which eagerly grasps at any straw that can assist in their battle against conservatism.

One can’t help but chuckle at the irony of a party professing a love for democracy while simultaneously seeking to impose term limits on justices—those individuals who uphold the Constitution and enforce what the law actually states. If anything screams, “We’re scared of the judicial branch doing its job,” this is it.

This is not the first time liberal leaders have sought to shake things up under the guise of reform. It brings to mind a group of teenagers deciding that their parents’ rules are just too restrictive, and they’ll change them if they can’t just ignore them entirely. The concern here is not just the timing—who decides to add a few new twists to the high court drama when they’re barely holding onto power—but what it means for the integrity of the judicial system overall.

As Jean-Pierre preps for the briefing, it’s worth asking how many more times she’ll have to field questions about these so-called reforms and how many more ideas Biden will throw at the wall in hopes something—anything—sticks. With only five months left, one can only hope that the radical agenda doesn’t detract from more pressing matters that should be on this administration’s radar. But when distraction is part of the game plan, it seems we’re in for quite the show.
