In an unsurprising turn of events, Rep. Jamie Raskin, a Democrat from Maryland, criticized House Republicans for their push to impeach President Joe Biden. Raskin dismissed the Republican efforts as a “nonscandal” and suggested that their true motivation was to prevent Donald Trump from being the only presidential candidate with an impeachment stain on his record. It seems like Raskin might be a bit jealous that his own party couldn’t successfully remove Trump from office.

But Raskin conveniently forgets the fact that Trump was impeached for a reason. He incited a violent insurrection at the Capitol, putting the lives of lawmakers and law enforcement officers at risk. It’s outrageous that Raskin would downplay the severity of such a grave offense. It’s clear that he’s just trying to shield President Biden from any accountability.

In a memo released on Monday, Raskin rejected Republican attempts to investigate President Biden and his son Hunter. He accused House Republicans of wasting their time and resources on baseless conspiracy theories instead of working on legislation. But let’s not forget that it was the Democrats who spent four years obsessing over the debunked Russia collusion conspiracy. The hypocrisy is astounding.
Raskin also dismissed any comparisons between Trump and Biden as a “false moral equivalency.” But let’s be real here. Biden’s mental lapses, questionable decision-making, and controversial policies have already raised serious concerns. It’s only natural for Republicans to want to hold him accountable. The fact that Raskin is so quick to dismiss these concerns shows just how out of touch he is with the American people.
As the House returns from recess, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy faces the challenge of avoiding a government shutdown while also dealing with mounting pressure to launch an impeachment inquiry against Biden. It’s clear that there are serious issues that need to be addressed, and it’s time for Republicans to take a stand. The American people deserve better than what they’re getting from this administration, and it’s up to the Republicans to fight for them.
