In a recent congressional hearing, the Daily Caller News Foundation’s Katelynn Richardson exposed the Biden administration’s shady use of taxpayer dollars to fund research aimed at suppressing “misinformation” online. This is just another example of the federal government’s increasing involvement in online censorship, from the CDC flagging posts during COVID-19 to the FBI colluding with social media giants to silence the Hunter Biden laptop story. It’s a clear infringement on the First Amendment rights of Americans and a dangerous step towards a government-controlled narrative.
The National Science Foundation (NSF) received a whopping $38.8 million for its “misinformation” efforts since Biden took office, according to a report by the Foundation for Freedom Online. But here’s the kicker – the DCNF discovered even more grants indicating that the NSF has allocated additional funding to target what they deem as mis- and disinformation. Who decides what is true and what is false? Certainly not the government!

The NSF might claim that they don’t engage in censorship and don’t partner directly with social media platforms, but their actions speak louder than words. Emails released ahead of the hearing showed an NSF program manager discussing removing or locking down videos after the DCNF’s report was published. If their gut reaction to fair questions from journalists is to hide information and strategize ways to avoid attention, how can we trust the projects they fund to provide unbiased and trustworthy information?
The government should never have the power to dictate what the people should believe or support a single narrative. Our Founders understood this, which is why they enshrined the First Amendment in our Constitution. By funding outside organizations that control information, the government is threatening free speech and freedom of the press. It’s a dangerous path towards a tyrannical government that silences dissenting voices.
The Biden administration’s funding of research to suppress “misinformation” online is just another example of their attempts to control the narrative and silence voices that disagree with them. We must stand up for our First Amendment rights and reject any government involvement in regulating speech and manipulating the flow of information. Freedom of speech and freedom of the press are fundamental pillars of our democracy, and we cannot allow them to be eroded by the whims of politicians and bureaucrats. It’s time to preserve and protect these essential liberties that define our nation.
