It looks like President Joe Biden might be hanging up his presidential race cleats any day now, if journalist Mark Halperin’s sources are to be believed. Democrats are reportedly nudging Uncle Joe towards the exit door faster than a liberal can say “climate crisis.”
According to Halperin, an agreement for Biden to step down as the Democratic nominee is already in the works, with a possible timetable pointing to the upcoming weekend. Drafts of his farewell speech are apparently being polished as we speak. So much for the gradual phase-out—this is more like ripping off a Band-Aid.
Interestingly, Biden reportedly plans to stay on as president, but won’t be giving any golden endorsements to his VP, Kamala Harris. The Democrats are apparently hoping for an open convention, with Harris and a merry band of wannabes duking it out for the top spot. Sounds like the reality TV show we’ve all been waiting for.

The list of potential contenders is a veritable who’s who of blue-state governors. California’s Gavin Newsom and Michigan’s Gretchen Whitmer are getting their names tossed around, alongside Kentucky’s Andy Beshear and Pennsylvania’s Josh Shapiro. Halperin also notes that Democratic super delegates are poised to step in like the referees they are if no clear winner emerges on the first ballot.
So why the push to shove Biden out of the race? High-level pressure from familiar faces like Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama, combined with aides whispering sweet nothings about his likely defeat to Donald Trump, appears to be turning up the heat. Axios adds that party leaders, friends, and key donors have lost faith in Biden’s ability to change public perceptions about his age and competence.
As one unnamed friend reportedly put it, Biden’s choice boils down to either stepping down as a hero or facing the prospect of no Biden presidential library. There might also be a health angle to Biden’s potential exit strategy, with the president hinting at medical conditions in a recent BET interview. Whether he’s seriously considering this route or it’s just a clever way to bow out gracefully remains to be seen.
