Biden Praises Old Pal McConnell on Retirement, Hints at Loss for Senate

President Joe Biden commented on the retirement announcement of Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) with a brief acknowledgment, adding that he and McConnell have a solid friendship that has lasted over two decades. The President also reminisced on his time working alongside McConnell during his tenure as Vice President under Barack Obama.

During a speech addressing his administration’s crime-fighting efforts, Biden spoke warmly of McConnell, citing their ability to trust each other and their rapport. Despite their political disagreements, Biden expressed his regret over McConnell’s decision to step down.

It’s been noted that McConnell has taken a relatively positive stance towards Biden’s presidency since the inauguration, especially in contrast to more staunch Republicans. Additionally, McConnell had welcomed Biden at the airport during the President’s visit to Kentucky earlier this year.

In his retirement address on the Senate floor, McConnell reflected on his years in the Senate since 1984 and spoke about the significance of knowing when to pursue the next life chapter. His decision to step down could potentially have implications for Biden’s future campaigns.

McConnell’s announcement entails stepping down from his leadership role in the Senate, a position he has held since 2006. Despite last year’s challenge from Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) for the party leadership position, McConnell continued his winning streak and secured his position. Although McConnell may be leaving his leadership role, he will remain an active member of the Senate until January 2027.
