Biden Pushes Costly Green Towers, Ignores Efficient Air Traffic Solutions

Aviation experts are perplexed, and for good reason. While Elon Musk is mulling over revolutionary advancements to modernize America’s archaic air traffic control system, the Biden administration is busy pushing a massive initiative to rebuild regional airport towers, but not with the latest technology. No, instead, they’ve opted for “green” towers that come with a hefty price tag but won’t address the actual problem at hand—the inefficiencies of air traffic management. Go figure!

At a time when air traffic control can easily be upgraded with remote tower technology—think of it as sticks and stones versus laser beams—the Federal Aviation Administration is holding onto the past tighter than a grandparent on a classic car. Those remote towers, already successfully used in Europe, offer safer and cheaper monitoring through the use of advanced cameras and infrared technology, especially in difficult weather conditions. But alas, the FAA prohibits their utilization here in the good ol’ U.S. of A.

Under the Biden administration’s watchful eye, the plan is to allocate hundreds of millions of dollars to construct up to 31 eco-friendly airport towers across the country. The project will use recycled materials and geothermal heating, all wrapped up in a shiny green bow. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg claimed these new towers—even if they are about as cutting edge as a rotary phone—are supposed to boost local economies and prepare for sustainable aviation. Presumably, he forgot to mention that actual safety improvements and efficiency upgrades might go a tad further in achieving those goals.

Echoing the sentiments of aviation experts like Robert W. Poole from the Reason Foundation, many are left wondering why no one in authority appears to be questioning this switch in direction. Instead, these airport sites were ideal candidates for remote towers that could provide better safety and less expensive operations. Continuously toying with new, unproven concepts while disregarding effective solutions raises eyebrows and, quite frankly, taxpayer frustration.

Meanwhile, Musk’s upcoming visit to the Air Traffic Control System Command Center in Virginia is stirring up hope that perhaps the innovation he champions will inspire a sooner rather than later modernization of this system riddled with bureaucratic delays. Remote tower technology, already having demonstrated improved safety metrics, provides a sharp contrast to the planned tower upgrades which seem to be more about fitting in with the administration’s “green” agenda than genuinely enhancing air traffic safety.

While the FAA continues to drag its feet, shutting down remote tower projects at various airports and deeming this technology “not currently approved for use” in U.S. airspace, the rest of the world has moved on. In places like London, air traffic is effectively monitored through remote towers. This begs the question: What exactly is holding back the FAA from embracing innovation? A reluctance to break from tradition, perhaps? All the while, the skies over the U.S. remain clouded with potential danger and inefficiency, with a “green” facelift the only change in sight.
