Biden Pushes Marijuana Reclassification Amid Voter Concerns

The Biden administration is planning to change the classification of marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule III, according to sources. This means they believe marijuana, which is currently seen as having no medical use and high abuse potential, should be considered differently. The Department of Health and Human Services made this request to the Drug Enforcement Agency, stating that marijuana could help reduce pain and has lower abuse potential compared to other drugs like cocaine and LSD.

President Biden asked for a review of how marijuana is classified back in October 2022 and is now following through on this promise. By making this change, Biden is showing his support for marijuana and its potential benefits. This decision also aligns with Biden’s previous actions, such as pardoning people convicted of simple marijuana possession.

Some people worry that this move might affect Biden’s support among black voters, as a recent poll showed a decline in their approval of him. However, many Americans support marijuana legalization, with 88 percent approving it in some form according to a recent survey. Currently, 24 states and the District of Columbia have legalized marijuana for recreational use, and 14 more allow it for medical purposes.

From a conservative perspective, this decision to reclassify marijuana could have negative consequences. By making it easier to access and potentially normalizing its use, there may be an increase in drug abuse and related issues. It’s important to consider the potential impact on society and public health before making such significant changes to drug laws.
