Recently, while campaigning in Pennsylvania, he shared a tale about his uncle’s death in World War II, but he got some facts wrong. Biden tried to contrast his uncle’s heroism with allegations against former President Trump’s actions at a cemetery in France. The accusations against Trump have been strongly denied by him and others who were there.
During a speech to steelworkers in Pittsburgh, Biden claimed his uncle signed up for the military after D-Day and flew reconnaissance missions over New Guinea, where he was shot down and eaten by cannibals. However, official records show that Biden’s uncle actually joined the Army a few weeks after the Pearl Harbor attack and was a passenger on a plane that crashed into the ocean near New Guinea. The plane had mechanical issues, and his uncle’s body was never found.
Despite the discrepancies in Biden’s story, he continued to repeat it to reporters and at campaign events. He also brought up Trump’s alleged derogatory remarks about veterans, calling them “suckers” and “losers.” It is important to stick to the facts when discussing such sensitive topics, especially when honoring the service and sacrifice of our veterans.
