President Biden’s 2024 reelection campaign is already hitting some major roadblocks, as a recent USA TODAY/Suffolk University Poll reveals that he’s losing ground to former President Donald Trump. The poll’s results are crystal clear – Biden is trailing Trump 37% to 39%, thanks to his inability to maintain the coalition of voters that propelled him to victory in 2020.

It’s a tough blow for the 81-year-old incumbent, as he’s losing support from key demographics that were once firmly in his corner. Among black voters, Biden’s support has dropped from 87% in 2020 to a measly 63% now. The support he does have still dwarfs Trump’s paltry 12%, but it’s a significant decline nonetheless.
Even younger voters and Hispanic voters are jumping ship to support Trump, with the former president now leading among voters under 35 and Hispanic voters. The numbers don’t lie – Trump is ahead of Biden 37%-33% among young voters and 39%-34% among Hispanic voters, according to the poll.
These slipping numbers among crucial demographics spell trouble for Biden’s chances of winning reelection, especially when paired with other recent polls showing him struggling to beat Trump in swing states. And that’s not all – the poll also paints a grim picture of Biden’s overall popularity, with a mere 39% of voters approving of his job in the Oval Office and a whopping 58% disapproving. Vice President Kamala Harris isn’t faring much better, with only a 33% approval rating.
But hey, it’s not all doom and gloom for Biden. The poll does provide a glimmer of hope in terms of the economy, as more respondents (29%) now view it as in recovery compared to 21% in October. Still, with Trump leading the pack in the GOP and outpacing his rivals by over 50 points, Biden’s got his work cut out for him.
The poll also reveals that a sizable chunk of voters would rather choose a third-party candidate than either Trump or Biden. Seventeen percent of voters fall into this category, and among black, Hispanic, and young voters, that number rises to 20% and 21% respectively. The fact remains – Biden’s got some serious work to do to win over these dissatisfied voters.
As for the GOP, Trump is the clear frontrunner in national polls, leaving former UN ambassador Nikki Haley and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in the dust. In the USA Today poll, Trump commands a whopping 62% of support compared to Haley’s 13% and DeSantis’ 10%. The man’s got the numbers on his side.
But it’s not all smooth sailing for Trump either. He’s facing a slew of legal battles, including four indictments related to falsifying bank records and attempting to overturn the 2020 election results. Despite this, his support remains unwavering, with 44% of respondents rating their Trump support as a “10,” compared to a meager 18% for Biden.
