The Biden administration’s fiscal incompetence knows no bounds, as evidenced by the astonishing $236 billion lost to improper payments across a staggering 71 federal programs in 2023. The Government Accountability Office has handed down this damning report, revealing that this monumental waste is just a drop in the bucket compared to the $1.8 trillion deficit that has ballooned under Biden’s watch. For those keeping score, that’s a lot of taxpayer dollars carelessly tossed into a black hole of bureaucratic folly.
This extravagant mismanagement is a reminder of former President Donald Trump’s solid promise to drain the swamp and to enforce a little thing called government efficiency. Unlike the current administration, Trump’s vision of a lean, accountable government seems like a fantasy. It’s hard not to think that if he were still in charge, the Department of Government Efficiency—or DOGE, as some have whimsically begun to call it—would be slashing wasteful spending and putting the brakes on the Democratic spending spree.
The massive sum — three-quarters of which was reportedly overpayments – was just a portion of the federal deficit ($1.8 trillion) under the Biden administration.

According to reports, three-quarters of that $236 billion wasted were classified as overpayments. It doesn’t take a genius to see that there’s something seriously wrong with a system that hands out that kind of money without a care in the world. In a world where some are held accountable for their financial dealings, the federal government appears to be treating taxpayer dollars like Monopoly money. Elon Musk, who has taken it upon himself to assist with a thorough audit of the payment systems, believes this kind of waste can be eliminated, and he might even suggest ways for the government to balance its budget if they snapped a few pencils and fixed some processes. Apparently, getting the bureaucracy to work efficiently is just as challenging as launching a Tesla into space.
Musk’s efforts, which include a focused examination of the Treasury Department’s money disbursement processes, have drawn attention for their potential to streamline and eliminate fraud. Meanwhile, helpful Musk allies have secured employment within the Treasury, having passed various background checks. Yet in true government fashion, they remain without actual authority to enact critical changes. This is reminiscent of a cartoonish attempt to overhaul the train system while still waiting for the train to arrive.
Then there’s DOGE’s ambitious plan to tackle the federal bureaucracy in earnest. They’ve already made headway by taking control of the Office of Personnel Management, reining in out-of-control budgets from the General Services Administration, and—heaven forbid—considering the closure of USAID, frequently viewed as a vessel for the CIA’s hidden agenda. Just imagine the nightmares haunting the leftists as they ponder a future where American tax dollars are actually managed wisely!
It’s a refreshing change to hear anyone in government talking about cutting waste and ensuring accountability. As the Biden administration continues to pile more federal-issued checks into the laps of the unworthy, it’s heartening to see figures like Musk and the remnants of the Trump administration leading the charge toward a government that doesn’t forget where it came from: the hard-working taxpayers of this great nation.
