According to an internal U.S. Secret Service document obtained by CNN, the attacks were so frequent that agents were advised to give Commander a wide berth and adjust their tactics to ensure their own safety. Despite efforts to address the aggressive behavior through additional training, leashing, and consultations with veterinarians and animal behaviorists, Commander’s propensity for aggression persisted, ultimately leading to the decision to remove the dog from the White House.
Furthermore, the documents revealed disturbing accounts of the severity of Commander’s attacks, including an instance where an agent suffered a deep, open wound on their forearm that required six stitches and antibiotics. Another incident documented in the report described the dog breaking the skin of a Secret Service agent’s arm, resulting in the agent filing a notice of traumatic injury and claim for compensation.
The First Lady’s communications director, Elizabeth Alexander, acknowledged the challenges in managing Commander’s behavior and emphasized the Bidens’ concern for the safety of White House personnel. Despite their genuine efforts to address the issue, it became evident that the White House environment was simply too overwhelming for Commander.
