Israel is facing a dire need for weapons, given the recent increase in attacks by terrorist group Hamas. In a surprising turn of events, the Biden administration has agreed to send weapons to Israel, but with a condition that is both irrational and detrimental to the country’s security.

Israel urgently requested thousands of M-16 rifles from the United States after the horrifying slaughter of over 1,400 unarmed Israeli citizens by Hamas. However, the Biden administration hesitated to approve the sale unless Israel guaranteed that the weapons would not reach civilian outposts in the West Bank. This stipulation, characterized as unusual, only serves to appease the far-left flank of the Democratic party, which is pressuring Israel to enact a ceasefire and baselessly accusing the Jewish state of carrying out a genocide.
The reasoning behind this restriction is baffling. The Israeli citizens who suffered the brutal attack in the West Bank are the very people who should be armed and prepared to defend themselves. Rifles are essential for deterring such attacks, as they provide a more effective means of self-defense against armed terrorists. As Israeli citizens undergo almost universal military training, they are more than capable of handling these firearms responsibly.
The Biden administration’s insistence on this unnecessary restriction undermines Israel’s security and goes against the interests of Israeli citizens in the West Bank. These rifles are being purchased by Israel, not given as aid. Therefore, Israel should be able to distribute them based on their own assessment of where they are most needed, rather than adhering to the misguided demands of America’s far-left.
In the United States, we are fortunate to have the Second Amendment, which protects our right to bear arms. Jewish citizens in the US are increasingly exercising this right, especially in response to the rising violence and attacks seen in our cities. It is crucial to recognize that this right extends to Israeli citizens as well, and they should be empowered to defend themselves.
If necessary, Israel can comply with the Biden administration’s demand by placing these purchased weapons in the hands of the IDF and providing other suitable firearms to the citizens. There are likely still IMI Galil rifles in the inventory of the Israel Defense Forces, which would be an excellent alternative for arming the citizens in the West Bank.
It is imperative for the Biden administration to prioritize Israel’s security and trust the country to determine how to distribute the weapons it purchases. The refusal to do so only serves to hinder Israel’s ability to defend itself against the genuine threats it faces.
