Biden’s DNC Speech Flops as Administration’s Failures Loom Large

It was intended to be Joe Biden’s moment in the spotlight, but what unfolded was more like an extended lecture that would make even the most dedicated insomniac reach for the alarm clock. The first day of the Democratic National Convention turned into a slog, and one would need a mountain of Advil to get through it. Biden’s presidency, often viewed as an unfortunate accident, only seemed to further cement itself as a disaster with inflation skyrocketing, questionable job growth, and a border crisis that he seems to have rolled out the welcome mat for.

The president’s mind appears to stay in some alternate universe where he’s an acclaimed statesman with a record of success that supposedly merits a second term. His speech carried the weight of a State of the Union address, but instead of highlighting accomplishments, it became clear that he was grasping at straws in a desperate attempt to sell himself to an audience increasingly tired of his self-inflicted chaos.

Biden’s tone was reminiscent of a bad horror movie, reverting back to the supposed “winter of peril and possibility” just before his inauguration. He played the fear card again to nudge the electorate into submission, reminiscent of his COVID-19 scare tactics that had people believing they could be struck down at any moment for merely existing without the jab.

As he pontificated about democracy being the beacon of hope, the crowd behind him seemed more like a parade of the bizarre—a mix of anti-Semites and Marxist sympathizers gathered under the pretext of supporting the current administration. The president lyrically lamented about his alleged battle for the soul of the nation, continuously bringing up 2017’s Charlottesville while conveniently ignoring the fact that demonstrators outside his own venue were waving the same flags as those he condemned. One doesn’t need a crystal ball to see the hypocrisy on full display.

His handling of history was equally shoddy, dragging out tired tropes about Trump while conveniently glossing over the grim realities under his administration. The punchlines about charging stations and a nonexistent border security handle fell flat, echoing the falsehoods that have become the staple of Biden’s political discourse. It was almost painful to witness—a seniors’ moment for the ages—where he admitted to being too old for the gig, which was a revelation that really wasn’t much of a revelation anymore.

To top it off, the same Democrats who preach unity directed a tirade of attacks at Donald Trump, whose survival of an assassination attempt was likely fueled by the vitriol in the room. The atmosphere hinted at a desire for something far more sinister, as if many attendees secretly wished for Trump’s demise, reflecting a willingness in the party to trade freedom and civility for hatred and division. The DNC gathering felt less like a celebration and more like a carnival of the absurd, filled with grotesques more than ideas or plans for the country.

In a bizarre twist, Biden was relegated to a secondary time slot due to program overruns, a sight that would stir sympathy even from the staunchest critics, which showcases the Party’s disarray. Somehow, even in a room packed with like-minded zealots, their treatment of a sitting president — irrespective of his mental acuity — was profoundly unsettling. Even if Biden deserves the disdain from conservatives, nobody deserves to be publicly humiliated in such a manner within their own party. But such is the sad state of the Democratic Party today, where even a half-brain-dead leader is forced out of his moment to shine.
