Joe Biden tried to blame the US' withdrawal from Afghanistan on the implementation of the Doha agreement, which was a collaboration between Donald Trump and the Taliban. Unfortunately, according to a recent report, the agreement was rendered invalid due to the actions of the Taliban.
This report contradicts the statements made by Mark Milley, the US' top general, and Lloyd Austin, the US Secretary of Defense. They told the Senate that the Taliban did not attack American forces during the period of the agreement's implementation.
A new book by James Hasson and Jerry Dunleavy claims that Biden's statements about the agreement and the US' involvement in Afghanistan were false. They noted that during the time of the agreement's implementation, the Taliban attacked American troops. The authors relied on various sources to come up with their case, such as public statements by Biden and the Pentagon.
According to the report submitted by the Lead Inspector General, the Taliban carried out limited attacks on coalition facilities. In response, the US forces had to carry out military operations in the areas where they were stationed.
The report also mentioned that the Taliban carried out attacks on Kandahar airbase, which houses hundreds of US troops. Hasson and Dunleavy noted that the Pentagon's Abbey Gate Report revealed that the Taliban carried out an attack on Bagram Air Force Base on June 28.
The statements made by Biden's administration contradicted those made by Milley and Austin. In a press briefing on May 3, John Kirby, a spokesperson for the State Department, acknowledged that the Taliban carried out attacks. However, despite the evidence, Austin and Milley maintained that the Taliban did not violate the agreement's requirements by attacking American troops before the withdrawal.
The revelation has revealed the extent of the Biden administration's lack of transparency and accountability. It is a shame that top officials would attempt to shift the blame for their failures to a previous administration. Instead of engaging in political games, leaders should take responsibility for what they do and protect the country's interests.
