In a classic display of bureaucratic overreach, federal agencies under the control of the White House have been churning out regulations at an unprecedented rate, leaving President Joe Biden’s agenda firmly imprinted on the country in red tape.

According to the analysts at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, for every single law passed by Congress and signed by President Biden, a whopping 46 regulations were unleashed on the American people in 2023. That’s a dizzying number, the likes of which hasn’t been seen since 1995. In comparison, the average over the past decade has been a mere 24 rules issued for every law passed. This explosion of federal regulations is the direct result of the gridlock in Washington, with the Biden administration resorting to hand over much of the governing power to agency administrators due to the lack of a supermajority in Congress to push through its agenda.
The alarming increase in regulations is proof that Biden is on a relentless mission to suffocate Main Street and Wall Street with bureaucratic red tape. And if that’s not enough, the Federal Register, the daily listing of new regulations, has ballooned to just over 90,000 pages, the second-highest total ever recorded. It’s no wonder that the analyst from the Competitive Enterprise Institute has dubbed this the “Unconstitutionality Index,” highlighting the flagrant bypassing of Congress in favor of unchecked federal growth. By allowing agencies to expand their reach without congressional oversight, the current administration is setting a dangerous precedent that threatens the very fabric of our democratic system.
It’s clear that Congress needs to step up and rein in these out-of-control regulators before the situation spirals even further out of hand. As the debt limit fight looms in 2024, it’s imperative that attention is focused on not only reining in spending but also tackling the insidious influence of the legislative/regulatory state. The time has come to “Get Things Undone in 2024” and put an end to this regulatory overreach once and for all.
