Biden’s Revisionist History on LGBTQ Rights Meets Skeptical Press

President Joe Biden recently took a stroll down memory lane while discussing his supposed contributions to LGBTQ rights. After returning from a trip to Houston, Biden faced a gaggle of reporters who, in a fit of curiosity, asked about his legacy related to this contentious issue. In typical Biden fashion, he pivoted to an anecdote from his childhood, showcasing not just his legendary storytelling prowess but also his fondness for selective memory.

The president recounted a heartwarming tale about a moment with his father that occurred during his youth. Apparently, before he was ushered in as the leader of the free world, Little Joey was granted a front-row seat to a kiss between two unnamed gentlemen right in the bustling center of Wilmington. This little trip down memory lane served the dual purpose of patting himself on the back for perceived bravery and pretending that his acceptance of same-sex marriage was a lifelong conviction. Abandoning historical accuracy for a moment, he claimed that his father, full of unshakeable wisdom, had simply declared that love is love. However, love was not the only thing that’s perhaps taken some odd turns—Biden’s views on marriage certainly took a substantial detour over the years.

Interestingly, Biden announced his support for same-sex marriage only in 2012, leaving many to wonder what happened during the previous decades where he was apparently more aligned with traditional definitions of marriage. Back in 2008, while engaging in a heated vice presidential debate against Sarah Palin, he emphatically declared that neither he nor Obama endorsed any redefinition of marriage from a civil standpoint. His sudden evolution from a staunch traditionalist to a so-called LGBTQ champion feels less like a heartfelt transformation and more like a politically calculated maneuver.

It’s hard to ignore the irony of Biden’s claims, especially since they came under the spotlight during a strategic year when the Obama administration was gearing up for re-election. That pivotal moment on NBC’s “Meet the Press” propelled Biden onto the LGBTQ champion stage, where he reiterated a newfound comfort with same-sex partnerships. Some may argue he realized playing to popular opinion can be politically advantageous, leaving many conservatives scratching their heads at the swift 180.

In the grand scheme of things, Biden seems to be trading on nostalgia and good press in an attempt to cement his legacy. However, real progress for LGBTQ Americans didn’t come from a childhood experience but rather from fervent prayers and advocacy from countless individuals advocating for real change. One has to wonder if the story of kissing men at Rodney Square is really the linchpin of Biden’s legacy or simply another chapter in a long book filled with political convenience and vacuousness disguised as heartfelt progressivism.
