Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE for short, has taken significant steps toward uncovering the labyrinth of waste that is Washington, D.C. Each day, it seems, the DOGE finds another layer of stupid spending enveloping the nation’s capital. Yet, for every dollar of inefficiency unearthed, it appears that a whole dozen more are lurking just beneath the surface. Among the most egregious examples of wasteful spending are billions of taxpayer dollars doled out to individuals who are in the country illegally. Rather than addressing the immigration crisis with real solutions, the government is opening the floodgates and showering illegal aliens with money and benefits.
The Department of Health and Human Services has ramped up its grants for migrants significantly since the Biden administration took office, leading to an astonishingly shocking report that reveals taxpayers are on the hook for an astronomical $22.6 billion. These funds, funneled into programs supposedly designed for the benefit of the less fortunate, are actually funneled to illegal aliens. The Office of Refugee Resettlement, which has faced criticism for losing track of thousands of migrant children, is effectively acting as a giant magnet for those crossing the border and claiming asylum. With billions of dollars flowing out to various nonprofits, American taxpayers are left wondering how their hard-earned money ended up financing this travesty.
This marked a sharp increase in the number of noncitizens eligible for funding under the auspices of helping migrants, asylum seekers, and refugees. In fiscal year 2023 alone, the ORR dished out over $10 billion to these organizations. However, the reality is that the vast majority of those benefiting from these grants are not refugees or legitimate asylum seekers; they are illegal aliens. The Biden administration seems to have cranked the spigot of government waste wide open, especially at a time when illegal border crossings have reached record levels, with 2.4 million apprehensions reported by Customs and Border Protection.
Not to be overlooked, non-governmental organizations have profited handsomely from the situation, raking in as much as $1.7 billion to provide services for illegal aliens. These services include everything from matching savings plans for cars, homes, and startups to small business loans and credit repair assistance. With programs like this pouring resources into the hands of people who have broken U.S. immigration laws, it’s no wonder that the message of free money travels fast back to their home countries, acting as a beacon for more illegal crossings.

While Democrats remain puzzled by President Trump’s decisive election victory, they might consider the very issues that drove many Americans to the polls. The blatant misallocation of funds and the prioritization of illegal aliens over American citizens are issues that have resonated with a significant portion of the electorate. The Office of Refugee Resettlement, under the current administration, has seen its finances swell with taxpayer dollars, allocating gargantuan sums toward supporting illegals at the expense of those who abide by the laws of the land.
Fortunately, the DOGE’s efforts shine a light on this governmental folly, invoking the timeless saying that sunlight is the greatest disinfectant. As the barriers shielding wasteful spending begin to crumble, those who have basked in the dark corners of government waste are starting to scurry. For too long, the Biden administration has provided cover for those exploiting U.S. generosity while neglecting American taxpayers. With Elon Musk’s department drawing attention to these issues, there is hope that the mechanisms of accountability can finally be restored and some semblance of order returned to the chaos.
