NBC’s Savannah Guthrie took a surprising turn this week when she grilled Secretary of State Antony Blinken on the Biden administration’s questionable decisions regarding Iran and Ukraine. As a long-time supporter of the Democrats, Guthrie’s sudden interest in holding officials accountable is a rare sight.

Guthrie first questioned Blinken about the billions of dollars the Biden administration agreed to pay Iran for the release of five wrongly imprisoned Americans. While Blinken claimed that the release of the Americans was a priority, Guthrie rightfully questioned the cost of such a deal. Will this payment create higher prices for Americans in the future? It’s a valid concern considering the economic struggles already facing our country.
The conversation then shifted to Ukraine, a nation that the US has committed over $113 billion to in the past 18 months. Guthrie challenged Blinken on the sustainability of this level of support, especially with no end in sight to the war and no clear strategy for victory. She also raised the issue of “war fatigue,” questioning whether the American people will continue to support Ukraine at such a high cost.
Blinken, unsurprisingly, failed to provide satisfactory answers. His response was filled with vague promises of long-term support and building Ukraine’s military. But as a conservative, it’s hard not to be skeptical of these claims. How many times have we seen our country mired in nation-building efforts, only to eventually abandon them with no positive outcome? Afghanistan is a glaring example.
Overall, Guthrie’s willingness to challenge Blinken on these important issues is a step in the right direction. It’s refreshing to see a member of the media daring to dig deeper and hold the Biden administration accountable. If only more journalists would follow Guthrie’s lead.
