Secretary of State Blinken’s visit to China may have resulted in an agreement to resume high-level talks, but it showed yet again that the Biden administration’s foreign policy approach is soft and weak. Despite Blinken’s repeated calls to resume military to military communications, China refused, showing once again that they have no respect for the United States under Biden’s leadership. This follows a pattern of disrespect and aggression on the part of China, from espionage balloons to warship near-misses.

Blinken’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping was not the success the administration had hoped for. While Blinken characterized the discussions as “constructive,” he failed to secure an agreement on military communications, a top priority for the United States. Xi’s comments suggest that China sees itself as having the upper hand in relations with the US. This is unacceptable and proves the ineffective nature of Biden’s foreign policy approach.
The lack of action from the Biden administration on military communications with China is deeply concerning. Without open lines of communication with China, accidents and conflicts could escalate quickly. China has proven time and time again that it cannot be trusted to act in good faith, and the decision not to resume military to military communications is a grave mistake. President Biden needs to take a firmer stance toward China and show that the United States will not be pushed around.
