A group of Black Lives Matter activists in Indiana caused a ruckus at the inauguration of South Bend’s mayor, showing their disapproval of the new leader and his ties to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg’s hometown.

The ruckus-makers, representing Black Lives Matter South Bend, took aim at Democratic Mayor James Mueller on Monday, accusing him of being a lousy leader and turning a blind eye to the city’s bigger issues. One clever sign held by a protester made it clear that “Mueller has failed us.” They demanded the release of an “opportunity fund” in protest of Mueller’s leadership.
The activists suggested that predominantly black neighborhoods in the city have been ignored and left to fend for themselves. They made it quite clear that they would no longer tolerate the lack of support for their community, calling out the mayor for letting them down.
While Mueller served as Pete Buttigieg’s right-hand person in the past, he claims to be committed to creating a city that embraces everyone. He boasted about the city’s dedication to inclusivity and ensuring fair opportunities for all when it comes to bidding on projects.
Despite Mueller’s words and the fact that six black council members are part of the city council, the activists insist that what they want is “real” representation. They demanded the reinstatement of the business suite and pushed for accountability from the so-called black Chamber of Commerce, calling on them to step up their game.
The NAACP, represented by Joseph Shabazz, and Black Lives Matter South Bend are leading the charge for change, demanding action rather than empty promises. They are determined to make their voices heard and hold the mayor accountable for the betterment of their community.
