A conservative immigration plan should be ruthless about border integrity while humane and orderly in its execution. End catch-and-release, expand expedited removal with due process protections, and deploy more personnel and technology at ports of entry and interior checkpoints. We can couple tougher enforcement with streamlined legal pathways so immigration is fair, orderly, and serves the national interest.
Interior enforcement must be restored so communities are safe and law-abiding residents feel protected. Expand worksite enforcement and make E-Verify universal to stop the magnet of illegal employment that fuels illegal crossings. At the same time, prosecute human traffickers and cartels who exploit vulnerable migrants and profit from our borders being porous.
Reform must also address the long-term health of the immigration system with a merit-based focus that rewards skills, language proficiency, and assimilation. Prioritizing entrepreneurs, STEM talent, and workers who fill genuine shortages preserves American wages and supports assimilation into our civic culture. Legal immigration has been a strength of this country — it simply must be orderly and benefit the American people first.
We should make clear that enforcing our laws is not xenophobia; it is patriotism. Standing for legal immigration, secure borders, and a coherent enforcement strategy is a defense of the nation, of cities and towns, and of the rule of law that binds us together.
Now is the moment for conservatives to demand action: elect leaders who will secure the border, fund enforcement, and reform the system rather than offer platitudes.
