In a major blow to the Biden administration, a judge has sided with Texas and issued a temporary restraining order to stop federal authorities from removing state-erected barriers, such as barbwire, along the Southern Border. This move comes just days after Texas AG Ken Paxton, who is back on the job after surviving an impeachment attempt, filed a lawsuit to prevent the administration from cutting the razor wire used to deter illegal immigrants from crossing the Rio Grande River.

The complaint from Texas alleges that cutting through the wire has increased recently, with thousands of migrants wading through the river and entering the Eagle Pass area in late September. This action not only damages state-owned property but also disrupts Texas’ border security efforts and hinders its ability to effectively deter illegal entry. In response to the crisis, Texas Governor Greg Abbott declared an emergency, allowing the mobilization of the National Guard and other entities to secure the border. Miles of wire fencing and buoys were put up as barriers, only to be cut down or removed by the Biden administration citing humanitarian concerns.
It is concerning that it took a judge’s intervention to halt these actions. Why would the federal government want to remove barriers during the largest illegal immigration crisis in history unless it wanted to expand and facilitate the crisis? The situation at the Southern Border is a humanitarian catastrophe fueled by weak enforcement and political rhetoric that has created an open door for migrants. Encouraging economic migrants to make a deadly journey illegally into the United States is not humane; it feeds a cycle of death and abuse while empowering drug cartels. The federal government must take action to stop this, or states should be allowed to protect their own territory.
The fact that Ken Paxton immediately took action after surviving an impeachment attempt is a positive sign for the people of Texas. The state is at the epicenter of the illegal immigration crisis, and it will require resolve and courage to address the issue. This temporary restraining order is hopefully just the first step towards establishing a state’s sovereignty in protecting its own border. It’s time to prioritize the safety and security of the American people.
