Dianne Feinstein, the senior California U.S. senator, has tragically passed away at the age of 90 after battling health ailments for months. This news comes as a shock to many, and the giants in U.S. politics are already beginning to pay tribute to her.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi reflects on Feinstein’s legacy and impact on women in politics, stating that she was an icon from the start. Senator Chuck Schumer also praises Feinstein, calling her a legend in both California and the Senate, and highlighting her leadership on various important issues.
Feinstein’s journey in politics started when she broke barriers for female candidates and officeholders, ultimately becoming the longest-serving U.S. senator in history. Her religious upbringing, courtesy of her Russian Orthodox mother and Jewish father, played a significant role in shaping her values. She attended Stanford University and later embarked on a political career, starting with her appointment to the state women’s parole board by Governor Jerry Brown.
Feinstein’s dedication to inclusivity is also well-remembered. Former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown recalls how she stood up for the rights of Black residents when discrimination was still rampant. Despite facing challenges, Feinstein remained a strong advocate for justice and equality.

Unfortunately, in recent years, Feinstein’s health has been a concern. She battled shingles earlier this year and struggled with basic tasks upon her return. Aides were overheard telling her how to vote, and the optics of her and other elderly politicians like President Joe Biden and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell have sparked frustration among the public regarding the advanced ages of those in power.
