Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom of California is in the midst of a smelly situation – quite literally. The governor has found himself associated with the “Gavin Newsom Poop Map,” an app that maps out reports of human feces on the streets of San Francisco. During a recent debate on Fox News, Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis pulled out a printed screenshot of the map, much to the amusement of Newsom.

DeSantis explained that each dot on the map represents a report of human feces found on San Francisco streets over the course of nine years, totaling more than 75,000 incidents. Despite the unflattering association, Newsom seemed unfazed, smirking and laughing it off. This display has led some to question his attitudes toward the homelessness crisis and decaying cities in California.
DeSantis, on the other hand, has been campaigning for the Republican presidential nomination, though he currently trails behind former President Donald Trump in the primary polls. The unexpected prominence of the poop map in the debate has sparked a lively discussion on social media.
