This ugly crescendo didn’t arise in a vacuum — it follows the federal Operation Metro Surge, a major ICE enforcement campaign that began in late 2025 and was intended to remove dangerous criminal aliens and restore public safety. Tensions exploded after the January 7, 2026, shooting of Renée Good during an ICE operation in Minneapolis, an incident that has inflamed passions and created an opportunistic narrative for radical activists.
Rather than calming things, the left doubled down: organized “no work, no school, no shopping” actions and a statewide day of protest on January 23, 2026, culminating in hundreds of clergy deliberately getting arrested at Minneapolis–Saint Paul Airport. These theatrics are presented as moral superiority, but the reality is a politically motivated campaign to block lawful enforcement and punish cities that cooperate with federal law.
