With only 21 percent of eighth graders proficient in reading, maybe the focus should be on improving education rather than pushing a political agenda.
The leaked documents reveal that the union is pushing for massive raises, with an average salary of $93,182 potentially increasing to $144,620 by 2028. This kind of salary hike is way above what the average Chicago household earns. It’s concerning to see such bold requests when the city is already facing financial difficulties and high levels of violence.

The demands don’t stop there. The union also wants full coverage for abortion care, benefits for fertility treatments, and money for migrants. They are even asking for gender-neutral bathrooms in every school and policies that would prevent informing parents about their child’s rejection of their biological sex. These demands seem more focused on pushing a social justice agenda than on actually helping teachers and students.
This kind of progressive wish list is not what Chicago needs right now. The focus should be on improving education outcomes and addressing the city’s deep-rooted issues, not on pushing divisive policies. The union’s demands are excessive and show a disconnect from the real needs of the community. It’s time for the union to prioritize the education and well-being of Chicago’s students above their own political interests.
