A woman named Twanda Willingham was shot with a gun that was supposed to be destroyed by police after being turned in at a buyback event. Instead of keeping citizens safe, Chicago officials let criminals get their hands on the very weapons they promised to take off the streets.
Here’s how badly the city messed up. The Glock pistol disappeared right from inside a police station full of officers who were supposed to keep it secure. Someone with access to the evidence room stole the gun and tried to cover it up by switching identification tags and throwing paperwork in the trash.
This stolen gun didn’t just hurt one person. After shooting Willingham, the same weapon was used in at least two more shootings before police finally found it with a 16-year-old criminal. That’s three separate victims who suffered because Chicago can’t even handle basic police work.
The worst part is this has happened before in Chicago. Back in 2006, another buyback gun ended up at a fatal shooting scene. Liberal politicians keep pushing these feel-good programs that waste taxpayer money while making our streets more dangerous.
Willingham is now suing the city, and she has every right to demand justice. She trusted that Chicago would protect her community by taking dangerous weapons away from bad guys. Instead, the city’s incompetence nearly got her killed.
Chicago spends millions on these buyback programs that experts know don’t work. Real criminals don’t turn in their guns for gift cards. They laugh at these useless programs while law-abiding citizens get fooled into thinking their tax dollars are making them safer.
The city is too busy suing gun manufacturers instead of fixing their own broken system. It’s easier to blame companies than admit their anti-gun policies have failed completely. Meanwhile, honest Americans pay the price for liberal politicians who can’t do their most basic job of keeping evidence secure.
This scandal proves what conservatives have said all along about gun buybacks. They’re a waste of money that make politicians feel good while doing nothing to stop real criminals. Chicago needs to focus on locking up repeat offenders instead of running publicity stunts that put innocent people in harm’s way.
