American families work hard to send their kids to college, but foreign spies are sitting right next to them in class. A new congressional investigation reveals that Chinese students at top universities are secretly working for the Communist Party of China. These are not just innocent young people seeking education – they are potential threats to our national security.
The House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party just demanded information from six major universities about their Chinese students. Chairman John Moolenaar warned that these schools have become “incubators for China’s technological and military advancements.” The targeted universities include Stanford, Carnegie Mellon, and Purdue – all schools that receive millions in taxpayer funding.
China passed a law in 2017 that forces every Chinese citizen to spy for their government. The law says all Chinese people must “support, assist, and cooperate with state intelligence work” no matter where they live. This means Chinese students in America have no choice but to follow orders from Beijing when asked.
An investigation at Stanford University found that Chinese students are actively reporting back to Communist Party handlers. One anonymous Chinese student admitted that “many Chinese nationals have handlers” who “want to know everything that’s going on at Stanford.” Another student told professors they couldn’t meet because they had to see their CCP contact first.
Since 2000, there have been 224 cases of Chinese spying in America. Most of these happened after dictator Xi Jinping took power in China. The FBI has caught Chinese nationals stealing everything from nuclear weapons data to NASA research secrets.
Our universities care more about foreign tuition money than protecting American secrets. They welcome these students with open arms while ignoring the obvious security risks. Meanwhile, hardworking American students lose spots to potential spies who might steal the technology that keeps our country safe.
The Trump administration allowed hundreds of thousands of Chinese students into our universities during a time of growing tensions with China. This was a massive mistake that put profits over patriotism. We handed our enemies the keys to our most sensitive research facilities.
Congress must act now to protect American innovation and security. We need strict background checks for all Chinese students and constant monitoring of their activities. Our universities must choose between Chinese money and American safety – they cannot have both.
