Chris Christie, the former governor of New Jersey and once a loyal supporter of Donald Trump, is now speaking out against the former president. In an interview with Maureen Dowd of The New York Times, Christie made a bold prediction – that Trump will show up at the GOP debates because his ego won’t allow him to miss out on the spotlight. According to Christie, Trump can’t stand not being the center of attention and won’t be able to handle not being on a big TV show like the debates. As a conservative Republican, it’s refreshing to see Christie speaking out against Trump and not being afraid to criticize him.

But there’s something else going on here that nobody seems to be talking about. It seems that Trump is running a “basement campaign” – since announcing his campaign last year, he has held fewer than 30 in-person campaign events. In comparison, other Republican candidates like Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley have held dozens of events. Trump’s campaign claims that the reason for the lack of rallies is the cost, but could it also be because Trump is trying to avoid saying things that could hurt his defense against the multiple indictments he’s facing? As a conservative, it’s concerning to see our former president potentially prioritizing his legal battles over engaging with the voters.
While it may be tempting for Trump to avoid the debates and play it safe, he could be sacrificing that important connection between the candidate and the voters. As a candidate, it’s important to engage with voters and give them the opportunity to hear your ideas and ask questions. By avoiding the debates, Trump could be missing out on the chance to connect with his base and sway undecided voters. As a conservative, I believe it’s crucial for our candidates to actively engage with the American people and present their visions for the future.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Trump is currently ahead in the polls, but a lot can change in the next six months. As other candidates continue to campaign and engage with voters, Trump may find himself falling behind if he doesn’t step out from behind his social media platform and get face-to-face with the American people. Only time will tell if Trump’s strategy will pay off, but as a conservative, I hope to see more candidates actively engaging with voters and participating in the democratic process.
