Chuck Todd advises Kamala Harris to reconsider California gubernatorial run

Former “Meet the Press” host Chuck Todd has supposedly taken it upon himself to offer some sage advice to the ever-ambitious Kamala Harris, who is contemplating a run for either the California governorship in 2026 or the presidency in 2028. It seems that even Todd can see the dark cloud hanging over her prospects, and perhaps even a hint of schadenfreude creeps into his observations regarding her political future.

Todd believes that if Harris were to run for governor, it would essentially mean she’s throwing in the towel on the presidential aspirations she once endorsed with such gusto. However, he warns that in California, where Democrats have held the reins for a staggering sixteen years, it might be hard for an insider like Harris to convince voters that she represents any kind of meaningful change. After all, if there’s one thing Californians might be tired of, it’s the same old familiar faces in a state that is teetering on the brink of disaster.

He elaborated that Harris’s task would be nearly Sisyphean. It’s not enough to just show up and run for governor when she would actually need to distance herself from Gavin Newsom, her fellow Democrat and the current governor. For the voters who’ve suffered through years of Democratic leadership resulting in skyrocketing crime rates, exorbitant taxes, and rampant inflation, Harris’s brand of insider politics might as well be a Monty Python skit for all the good it would do her.

Todd suggests that if Harris really wants to give the political game another go, it might be best for her to take a break from the limelight and give us all a chance to forget just how much she “embraced the moment” during her vice presidency. After all, who wouldn’t want to take a hiatus from a politician with an approval rating that makes a rock look popular? Waiting until 2030 or 2032 to resurface may sound boring, but it might just be the only way for her to recharge her image.

In short, Todd’s warning carries a mix of pity and incredulity. If Harris truly intends to woo the voters of California, she will have to find a way to market herself as an outsider, which is a monumental task for someone with her extensive resume of political entrenchment. It appears that Chuck Todd, not typically known for being gentle with fellow Democrats, may actually be trying to help her sidestep a political train wreck. Harris’s current venture may very well be her greatest act of political theatre—but if history teaches anything, it’s that the audience has grown weary of repetitive scripts.
