In a revealing segment on CNN, host Erin Burnett touched on the increasingly left-leaning positions of Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris from her 2019 campaign. It appears that Kamala, who was once hustling to the left of Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, has some decidedly radical ideas tucked away in her policy toolkit.
Burnett highlighted a recent investigation that uncovered responses from a 2019 questionnaire Harris filled out for the ACLU. Among her claims, the future Vice President expressed her desire to defund ICE. Her argument was rooted in a sentiment that the immigration detention system in the United States was running amok, insisting that thousands of individuals and families were being held unfairly. Harris made quite the theatrical statement back in the day when she indicated her ambition to slash funding for ICE – a bold stance that seemed designed to win over the more progressive wing of her party.
As if that were not eyebrow-raising enough, the investigation revealed that Harris also advocated for taxpayer-funded gender transition surgeries for detained migrants. Yes, you read that right. The prospect of American taxpayers covering gender transition procedures for individuals in detention reflects a mindset that’s not only out of touch with mainstream American values but also delves into the bizarre realm of progressive priorities.
The questionnaire serves as a chilling time capsule of just how far left the Democratic Party has drifted in recent years. Harris ambitiously positioned herself during the 2019 primary in a manner that left no room for moderation or common sense. She announced plans to cut immigration detention by half, advocated for the closure of family and private facilities, and even proposed to end ICE detainers altogether. Such positions were, at the time, perfect for snagging progressive votes but less appealing to the average American who’s concerned about border security and immigration enforcement.

As the political landscape evolves, those taxpayer-funded schemes may just turn out to be the past rather than the path forward.
