CNN has once again demonstrated its knack for playing blame games in the wake of a tragedy, this time immediately attempting to link a horrific plane crash in Washington, D.C. to President Trump. An American Airlines regional jet collided with an Army helicopter over the Potomac, resulting in the recovery of 27 bodies so far. Rather than focusing on the solemnity and severity of the situation, CNN managed to change the narrative to place the blame squarely at the feet of the former president and his administration’s transition.
As first responders raced against the clock to recover victims and wreckage, CNN anchor Abby Phillip was quick to inject politics into the situation. Instead of acknowledging the grief and tragedy of the event, she suggested that the FAA’s lack of a confirmed administrator due to the recent shift from the Biden administration was somehow responsible for the disaster. It seems that in CNN’s world, any misstep can be traced back to Trump, even in the face of immediate loss of life.

She reminded viewers that air traffic controllers remain in place irrespective of which party holds the presidency. CNN’s coverage, riddled with political insinuation, did little to honor the gravity of the moment, and many viewers echoed their disapproval loudly across social media platforms. The network’s relentless pursuit of a narrative, especially when it contradicts expert opinions, exemplifies the depths to which they will sink to score political points.
The absurdity didn’t stop there. CNN commentator Bakari Sellers resorted to posting an irrelevant tweet about a federal hiring freeze, illustrating a complete lack of tact and timing. Many were quick to call out his insensitivity, leading him to delete the post. It appears he was frustrated, but blaming Trump for a tragedy—before even the bodies were recovered—is nothing short of disgraceful.
Public reaction was swift, with many criticizing CNN and its anchors for failing to act responsibly in such a significant moment of national tragedy. One viewer aptly noted that the network’s focus on politics over compassion underscored why their ratings continue to plummet. With such a disregard for balanced reporting in times of crisis, CNN seems to have found a shocking new low.
Instead of promoting unity and respect in the face of grief, CNN’s instinct was to exploit the tragedy for political gain, showcasing a pattern of behavior that ignores journalistic integrity. The conclusion is clear: in the world of CNN, the mantra may very well be to capitalize on misfortune and misdirection, but for Americans, a sense of decorum should always take precedence over partisan blame.
