In a significant shift towards tougher immigration enforcement, Congress has put the pedal to the metal on President Trump’s immigration agenda. On Wednesday, lawmakers gave the green light to the Laken Riley Act, a new bill that empowers the Department of Homeland Security to detain and deport illegal immigrants who commit minor crimes, like shoplifting. Forget the days of being soft on crime; this new law adds muscle to Trump’s vision of a secure and law-abiding America.
As if that weren’t enough, the Pentagon has rolled out the welcome mat for 1,500 additional troops at the southern border, accompanied by airlift support to speed up deportations of illegal immigrants. In a bold move, the Coast Guard has now been enlisted for intensified operations against those crossing the border illegally. Attorneys at the federal level are also gearing up to go after those sanctuary cities that prefer to protect criminals over their own citizens. It seems the government is finally serious about taking back control.

Adding salt to the wound of the previous administration, the White House has yanked the Biden-era Spanish-language webpage, signaling that the administration isn’t playing ball when it comes to immigration jargon. Furthermore, regulations that prevented Homeland Security agents from using terms like “illegal” and “alien” to describe unauthorized migrants have been rejected. This administration is quite literally “putting the ‘law’ back in ‘law enforcement.’”
The Laken Riley Act, named in memory of a nursing student tragically murdered by an illegal immigrant, aims to prevent similar heartbreaks by mandating the detention of illegal immigrants with certain criminal records. Rewind the clock to the days under Biden, where criminals roamed free while the rest of the country felt the consequences. Republicans are optimistic that this law could have kept the killer behind bars instead of giving him another chance to kill.
While the Democrats are labeling this legislation as a distraction from pressing issues like grocery prices, one must wonder why a party so eager to legalize illegal immigrants and ban firearms appears more concerned about the criminals than the law-abiding citizens they claim to protect. The Democratic leaders’ attempts to downplay the urgency of illegal immigrant crime only amplify the stubborn refusal to acknowledge the problems that ordinary Americans face. Meanwhile, Republicans stand firm, eager to defend the law, protect citizens, and finally put an end to the farcical leniency of past policies.
